case study: Project activities delivered to Cornwall Carpets and Flooring by Cornwall Marine Network
Overview of the project
Cornwall Carpets and Flooring are a Launceston based, award winning carpet and flooring specialist, delivering and fitting top quality flooring across Cornwall and Devon.
They have developed a training facility to deliver comprehensive training, development and an assessment centre for floor laying in the Southwest.
The majority of Cornwall Carpets and Flooring installers have learnt their trade inhouse.
All installers are committed to safely achieving the high standards of timely workmanship and presentation that clients have come to expect.
Sector Priorities & Regional Drivers
The warehouse is located just off the A30 at Launceston which enables Cornwall Carpets and Flooring to deliver, service sites and carry out quality installations within a day.
The training facility, also at the Launceston warehouse has created seven Apprenticeships so far with a further four underway and one new trainer role.
This industry has chronic labour shortages, and the intention is to offer the training to other sector SME`s in the very near future.
What need was identified?
During the pandemic Andy Hardy, MD of Cornwall Carpets and Flooring was able to design this apprenticeship based on real work-based requirements.
How did the project fulfil these needs?
CMN Training and Skills, part of Cornwall Marine Network, worked with Andy Hardy of Cornwall Carpets and Flooring to develop the first employer led Flooring Apprenticeship programme, available at a dedicated training centre in Launceston, Cornwall.
CMN Training are now registered to deliver the nationally approved Apprenticeship Standard as well as a bespoke new qualification accredited through the Open College Network at Level 2. This involves practical assessment and project-based work.
What was delivered?
The new Level 2 Floor Laying Apprenticeship was launched in September 2021 and incorporated Cornwall Carpets proven comprehensive in-house training manual, which goes over and above Apprenticeship standards in certain areas.
Additional adult training was also developed for the floor laying industry to enable Continued Professional Development (CPD) of new practices, materials and equipment for existing staff.
Cornwall Carpets and Flooring delivered the practical elements of the floor laying Apprenticeship to maintain high standards, up to date practices and professional service to industry standard.
They also worked to become an End Point Assessment centre at the Launceston facility. It is of note that this will be the only End Point Assessment Centre in the Southwest for Floor Laying Apprentices, providing a regional focal point for all levels of carpet layers within the industry in the Southwest.
Along with the creation of Apprenticeships andtraining roles the facility will continue to growand offer new career opportunities to localpeople for years to come.
Business Insight, Impact and Feedback
Andy Hardy of Cornwall Carpets and Flooring said “Since I started in the industry, training and education has been a passion of mine. Whilst establishing my business, Cornwall Carpet and Flooring in 1999, I carried out my assessor training. I started developing the concept a few years ago but during the first lock down I had time to develop, refine and write a dedicated manual. I then contacted Mark Williams, Director of CMN Training and Skills to open discussions about accreditation. We are now running this Pilot Flooring apprenticeship which started in September 2021”.
“A Floor layer is a trained craftsperson who will be involved with the installation of carpets, vinyl, linoleum and rubber as well as laminate and wood flooring. Floor layers work for large and small employers in all types of buildings within a diverse range of commercial and domestic environments. However, what many do not realise is that there is a huge number of flooring choices, all requiring different approaches, adhesives and treatments.”
Andy continued: “There are thousands of carpet and flooring choices. Coupled with changing interior trends and higher customer expectations we believe our training regime and staff progression offers our clients the perfect choice. Cornwall Carpets and Flooring has adopted eco and circular sustainable business practices. We make sure we keep ahead of changing trends in interiors as well as making sure we offer customers choice. We cover Devon and Cornwall and are an established business totally focussed on great customer service. I believe in growing talent locally in our custom- designed training facility located in Launceston. All training is carried out here on the premises and on the job so our Apprentices do not need to attend College. This means we can give local people the opportunity to join as an Apprentice with opportunities to progress to management, trainers and assessors. James Hardy started as a trainee with us 20 years ago and now heads up the practical side of the training and is working toward his assessor qualification with CMN Training”.
